Intro to Hockey

Ages 3-5
Intro to Hockey is SMHA’s introductory program designed to welcome players who are experiencing
hockey in full equipment for the first time. The program focuses on skill development, including skating,
stick handling, passing, shooting, and small-area games. It is structured so that everyone can learn
hockey and skating at their own pace.

Ice times

Ice times are 1-hour sessions starting at 7:45 am at the Oakbank Community Recreation Arena, running
from the first weekend in October to mid-February. Ice slots are typically divided into players who can
already skate on their own and players who are just learning to skate. Coaches run drills and games at
each of the ends.

Parents

Parents are welcome on the ice with their players initially. Helmets and skates are required for anyone
on the ice. It is recommended that parents transition to the bleachers during the first half of the season
to watch their children flourish independently. Coaches will be on the ice to run drills and ensure
everyone is having fun.

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR INTRO TO HOCKEY ARE BELOW:

  • Helmet -  CSA-approved hockey helmet with a full cage or visor.
  • Stick – An ice hockey stick (not a street hockey stick).
  • Skates – Make sure they fit, are sharp, and are tied properly. Skates run about 1 size smaller
  • than your shoe size. Sharp edges will help your child turn better. Skates that are tied too tight
  • will hurt while skates that are tied too loose can lead to injury.
  • Hockey Gloves
  • Shin/Elbow Pads
  • Shoulder Pads
  • Hockey Pants
  • Groin Area Protector (jock/jill)
  • Hockey Socks
  • Hockey Jersey
