Team Manager Cheat Sheet

You’ve agreed to be a Team Manager! First of all, thank you for stepping into an important role for your team. Team Managers are one of the many pillars that make a season possible for our kids. We’ve developed a little bit of a cheat sheet for new Managers to help get you started.

Constitution – It’s a good idea to read and be familiar with applicable constitutions:

Team Fees – In conjunction with your team treasurer and coaching staff you’ll have to set team fees. Team fees cover tournament fees, coach gifts, windups, extra ice, etc. These typically run $200-$400 per rostered player depending on level and age.

Equipment – The manager, if assigned prior to equipment pick up, will be responsible for the team equipment which can include jerseys and jersey bags, pucks and puck bags, first aid kit and goalie equipment. Equipment is to be returned in the same shape (minus regular wear and tear) at the end of each season. Failure to do so can result in forfeit of your teams Equipment Deposit.

Name Bars for Jerseys – Name bars are ordered through the ProShop at OBCC. It is highly recommended by SMHA Equipment that Rob is used for both attachment and removal of these names bars to minimize damage to our jerseys. As a reminder, damage to jerseys due to inappropriate removal of name bars can result in forfeit of your Equipment Deposit.

Tournaments – Finding and registering for tournaments is the responsibility of each team. Do this early as many tournaments fill up quickly. Hockey Manitoba lists available tournaments by age group and provides a contact for registration (https://www.hockeymanitoba.ca/teams/tournaments/minor-hockey-tournaments/). When your tournaments are booked, please email the SMHA Ice Scheduler with your ‘blackout’ dates to ensure no league games are scheduled those weekends. SMHA will not cover any fees associated with rescheduling if you miss this step.

Affiliated Players – It is possible throughout the season that you will have to call up players to fill a game day roster. These players are called “Affiliated Players” or “AP”. Read thoroughly the EMHA rules regarding this and ensure these rules are followed. If they are not followed the game will be forfeited, no exceptions. Rules can be found in section 22 of the Eastman Hockey League Constitution. If you have any questions about the rules and if you’re acting appropriately feel free to reach out to the SMHA Convenor for your age group.

Game Sheets – When you are the home team you are required to provide and submit the game sheet for that game. The EMHA game sheet template is found here: https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/cdn-app.teamlinkt.com/media/association_data/14369/site_data/images/library/files/emha_game_sheet_template.pdf. It is very important that you submit game sheets per EMHA requirements. Please read in detail Page 9 of the EMHA Coach Manager Handbook (https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/cdn-app.teamlinkt.com/media/association_data/14369/site_data/images/library/files/emha_coach_manager_handbook_updated_sept_2017.pdf). *PRO TIP* Instead of writing your roster down each time, print stickers to ease your game day prep time!

Windup – Don’t forget to book a team windup! This is a great way to celebrate the great season behind you!

    Bench and Team Staff

Bench Staff – As a member of the bench staff, Team Managers are required to complete a Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry check. All information regarding these checks will be provided to you prior to the coaches meeting held at the beginning of the season. Additionally, you will have to complete Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders prior to the deadline.

Team Staff – It is helpful to divide and concur with the various duties. Roles that are helpful include:

    • Treasurer – Manages all team fees. It is great to have this duty separated to minimize parent questions regarding the use of team fees.
    • Parent Liaison – This person is important. They are to field parent concerns regarding coaching staff and act as a middle ground to keep the peace.
    • Tournaments – From time-to-time SMHA will host their own tournaments. It is helpful to have a parent willing to be the team contact/rep for these to assist with goodie bags, etc.
